This hot tub is ancient and broken and I want to move it out of an enclosed porch. It is 7' X 5' and about 4' high. Is made of fiberglass and weighs about 500 lbs. What is the best way to get it out of there cost effectively without renting a crane. chop it up with a chain saw and carry out the pieces?

I don't think a chain saw is going to very work well on fiberglass. I would rent or borrow a reciprocating saw or get an abrasive type blade for my circular saw.

And be sure to dress the part! I would get a pair of disposable coveralls and some decent gloves, then tape the coveralls to the gloves and my boots with duct tape. Wear a good dust mask, goggles and a face mask to cover as much of your head and face as possible. Fiberglass is nasty stuff on your skin and can be really nasty if you inhale it or get it in your eyes or ears!

Easiest method on you might be to offer it up on FreeCycle... let someone come pick it up for free.

You didnt say what was broken, so that may not be feasible...if you are set on actually destroying it, then a sawsall (reciprocating saw) will do the trick. The cabinet can be removed from the shell. Usually it is just expanding foam and perhaps a bit of reinforcing fiberglass across a piece of plywood holding them together.

Good Luck

i just moved one,
take the wood apart , and take off the pump
the fiber glass inst that heavy
a normal Axe would chop it up , but it best to keep it together, two grown men can lift it
the shell weights about 190 lbs

Friends & Beer. I worked at a pool place in college with two men and they just charged a lot to move it out of basements, bathrooms, sunrooms etc... even places that were built around the tub.

Unless you have an opening at least 4' wide...you are going to have to cut it up...or cut a hole big enough to turn it on it's side and get it out.

Nasty stuff when you cut it up. Wear long sleeves and wear a good dust mask and goggles.
