Load all the drivers. It comes in a separate CD that comes with PC. If gone, download from HP's site. Windows XP installation CD does NOT contain chipset drivers, specific VGA and Sound card drivers, etc.
Installation of drivers is usually done immediately after installing the OS (Win XP in your case).

You did not say what you did in MSconfig. Try running MSconfig again and in the General , select Normal startup and reboot.

Then before you do anything else, make sure all the drivers and patches are installed first

Make use of HP auto detection utility.

If you do not want the add-ons like Yahoo toolbar, try using the Add/Remove tool first.

The easiest and best way to solve your problem is to do a system restore.

Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore.

Restore it back to a date before you started having problems. It will get rid of any programs installed after the restore point was created, but you keep the data and you get your computer back.

It' only takes about 10 minutes or less.
