I have a xps 600 (upgraded to vista) and a xbox 360, i want both to be online at once, so i buy product stated above, and i plug them all in (plus the router) and the first device i plug in is the only one that works, no matter what, if anyone could help me with this it would be greatly appreciated.

I am sure i have a router plugged into the 1st slot and then pc 2nd and then xbox 3rd

You should have devices connected as follows:
PC and xbox connect to switch. switch connects to router. router connects to cable/dsl modem.

What you may want to check is if your router has what's called DHCP enabled which pretty much assigns IP Addresses(kind of like street signs) to each device connected to it. if it has this enabled on the router you should be good, the switch should'nt be capable of it. check the router manufacturers page about doing whats called cascading routers and switches, hooking one into another. they should have some good info. hope this helps.
also your router is what allows you to share your internet connections. so the internet should plug into a special port on it. and then the switch into the router and everything else on the switch.
what kind of router do you have and what kind of internet?
