In order to use the quadratic formula, the equation first needs to be set equal to zero... because essentially, when you're solving a quadratic equation you are actually finding the roots (zeroes) of the parabola on the graph (where the graph crosses the x-axis).
x^2 - 3x = 7x - 2 (subtract 7x and add 2 from both sides)
0 = x^2 - 10x +2
Use a=1, b=-10, c=2 in the quadratic equation to get...
x = -5 + sqrt (23)
x = -5 - sqrt (23)
(sorry, I don't have a calculator handy to give you the actual decimal answers)

Okay, well you have to make it all equal to 0 so first you have to combine like terms:
So the first step is gonna end up like this:
x^2-10x+2=0
So then the quadratic formula is: 10+/- (the square root of) -10^2 - 4(1)(2) over 2(1) so, just solve and you should get the answer. Good luck! ;-)
I actually just had a quiz using the quadratic formula today that I got an A on.

You just move everything to one side.
x^2 - 10x + 2 = 0
Then you can plug these values into the quadratic..
A = 1, B = -10, C = 2

x ² - 10 x + 2 = 0
x = [10 ± â92 ] / 2
x = [10 ± 2â23 ] / 2
x = 5 ± â23

First get everything to the left of the equal sign, so
x^2 - 3x = 7x - 2 becomes...
-7x +2
x^2 -10x + 2
A = 1 (the coefficient of x^2)
B = -10 (the coefficient of x)
C = 2 (the constant, coefficient of x^0 technically)
10 (+/-) sqrt (100 - 4 (1)(2))
--------------------------------------
2(1)
10 (+/-) sqrt (92)
--------------------------------------
2
10 (+/-) 2 * sqrt (23)
--------------------------------------
2

First knock it into shape:
x^2-3x-7x+2 (change the side, change the sign)
x^2-10x+2
a=1
b=-10
c=2
Go for it.
