Well, I am assuming you know what desertification is.

1) If something is turning into a desert its drying up. Very Likely.

2) If water is evaporating, then salt concentration in saltwater bodies rises. Very Likely.

3) No water, no crops. Very Likely

4) No crops can equate to economic loss. Likely

5) There are many societies based in desert environments. Look at Dubai. They are doing fine. Least Likely.
