I'm assuming its because these days anybody can get a record contract. It doesn't matter how good they sound as long as they can be marketed the right way.

Why not ask why is the music of the 60's, 70's and 80's not like the music of the 20's, 30's and 40's or like the 1700's or the 1800's. You know the good music???? There are only two constants in the universe, Time and the changes wrought by its passing. I think it would become very boring if nothing ever changed, if all music, all movies, all television never changed.

Just because something is popular doesn't mean it's good. Witness the popularity of Britney, Justin and their (former mouseketeer) ilk.

My explanation is that from MTV on, music was corporately consolidated, made with dollars and cents in mind. It's called show BUSINESS for a reason. Yes, music was sold for a profit, since ASCAP was formed, but it didn't lose its identity in an effort to see just how much money could be made. Now music is sold to the lowest common denominator for money.

I have to disagree with you.......I think today's rock is bitchin'. Yes, sometimes you can hear the influences of bands from the eras you mentioned, and that's not such a bad thing. But when I hear those influences applied with today's sound, I can't help but think how much better music has gotten. I do love the classics; they're the stuff I grew up on. But I do have to admit that there are some pretty talented kids out there today making great music.
