The secret is finding a way to sell things that people perceive as good (usually the small things count for a lot), and then duplicate duplicate duplicate over and over again. Think about it, IT'S NOT ALWAYS ABOUT LOWER PRICES, just look at NORDSTROMS. FInally Wal-Mart is losing their grip people are looking FOR STYLES NOW AT SHOPKO AND TARGET. So isn't that the secret of selling THINGS AND STARTING A BIG COMPANY? Usually the small things count too such as HAPPY MEALS were like a HUGE deal for McDonalds and one of their things that gave them HUGE SUCCESS. OPINIONS

Sounds reasonable. But I wouldnt say that its the only way.
Then runs into the same problem as many other good ideas. If everyone started doing it, then it wouldnt work anymore

You've pointed out some good things but you forgot maybe the most important factor: Big companies have been around for a long time. Even MacDonald's is now almost 50 years old. Boeing is pushing 80-90 years old. Walmart is younger and may have difficulty surviving as their business model is probably not sustainable. (you can't ALWAYS keep having lower prices!).
