how can you tell if an ant is a male,or a flying queen female looking to start a new colony?

The male ant is smaller than even the worker ant in most species. In addition the female has a disproportionally large abdomen. They also distinguish themselves that you will see a large number of males and very few females.

The male has long antennae and a small head with great eyes. The winged youthful queen could be recognized on base of her wings and on the comparable time shorter antennae.
