The predicate is the part of the sentence that complements the subject by indicating a state of being or an action. The simple predicate is the verb in the sentence.

Joe ran a five mile race.
"Ran" is the simple predicate; it shows action.
The complete predicate would be ran a five mile race (ran is the verb, race is the direct object, and "a and five mile" are adjectives that describe what kind of race it was).

Sally is so stubborn!
"Is" is the simple predicate and shows a state of being; the state of being stubborn!
