Let me start off by saying. Lets go Boston.
but this guy is just plain annoying now. Bases loaded and he flies out to the short outfield. He is not clutch. Only thing he really does is control the pitching staff . All year ii have seen him strike out in crunch time. Why is he even Boston's Captain? It probably just us boston fans hyping him up so much because it is Boston of coarse.

He never was and never will be. He will never be that above average player Manny and Ortiz are, he was named captain because he is a fun clubhouse guy who teammates learn to love and respect. The Sox should respect him even though he doesn't come through with them and give him a few more years before looking into a catching prospect.

Jason is a catcher in his late 30's. His bat slowed down in the second half of the season, although he had a pretty good September.

Varitek's usefulness is tied to his defense; there's no one better at managing the game as a catcher. That's pretty important. We'll see how much longer he can keep his offense at respectable levels over the long term.

Jason Vartiek is the heart of the Red Sox - he may not be clutch tonight or according to you all year, but he is undeniably irreplaceable behind the plate as the catcher.

P.S. he just hit a two run home run in the 7th!!

Its because of the 2003 and the 2004 season that made him special.

I think he is great as a catcher. He is great with the pitching staff, and he is good defensively. But i agree with you, he isn't that great of hitter. You can see he declining in skill at the plate. I do think he is the leader of the team though.

at least he hit the ball in the outfield and getting out by hitting the ball is better than strikingout

When a catcher loses his skills it happens fast, look at how many former catchers move to first or DH.
