Technically, primitive mythology would be based in Animism, whereas Classic Mythology would be based in later monotheism, diatheism, and polytheism.

I believe the term Classical Mythology is pretty much reserved for the Greek and Roman stories - probably due to those cultures' status as 'the beginning of civilization' or something to that effect.

Primitive Mythology, then, would be the mythology of any other culture that didn't evolve out of the Greeks or Romans.

primitve mythology probably had to do a lot with rituals and religion cults whereas classical mythology was probably more widespread but less "practiced."
