My friend told me that if you beat Halo 3 on legendary mode there is another ending? Is this true? or does he just go into the chronotube?

The metal planet doesn't mean halo 4, its a teaser to bungies new game Marathon as are all the Terminals in the game.

It's not really a different ending, just an extended one. Normally the game ends with Master Chief sealing himself in the chryotube, but in the extended version, his ship is seen headed for a metal planet. This planet is most likely tied to a new story arc (meaning that there will definitely be a Halo 4). This metal planet could also tie to Bungie's first game called Marathon.
