when you are speaking about evolution, the process is seen as an small tree, with branches, some which grow to great length and keep going and others, which reach a certain distance and falter. with the first cases of life, the conclusion has generally been that the process proceeded to 'budding', the offspring growing as part of and then, detaching itself from the parent and developing from there. no doubt there were other missteps that took place, but along the way, when the first amphibians developed and begun to appear, the process of creating a self contained habitat for the embryo to develop within to a level at which it would be able to survive on it's own proved the most successful. As we now see in nature, the other processes still exist, but in general, they are used by species that are less developed than we are. Egg laying is still a successful way of procreating, however and so, it continues, as many creatures use the process. When you ask, which came first, the chicken or the egg, actually the question is moot, because, at that stage, there were no chickens yet-they are descendants of the dinosaurs and so, in some way, the 'Terrible Lizards' yet survive even now, although they are a lot smaller and the only threat they pose us is the poop they lay upon our freshly washed cars. So, I guess you could say, the egg came first.

Well if you just mean eggs in general, then eggs of course.
Fish were around long before chickens, and fish lay eggs as well.
