What's the real/better version of I Need A Lover?

is it the John Mellencamp or John Cougar version?

When John Mellencamp first started out, an early manager gave him the name of Johnny Cougar because it sounded cooler than his real name. He never liked "Cougar" so he started gradually dropping it from his name. I believe he dropped it completely by the early 1990s.
