Kilts were worn by Celtic people in Scotland, Wales, Ireland and England. The Romans wore a form of kilt. Gradually the kilt retreated to Scotland and Ireland. It was worn throughout Scotland. The modern kilt bears little resemblance to the great kilt that was worn by ordinary people which consisted of one large piece of material worn as a skirt with the excess over the shoulder to be used as a blanket, shawl or protection from the weather.
