I have been seeing this MT for about 5 visits now and today she mentioned that she gets really sick of the traditional spa music. She plays a lot of Enya, and all the piano solos, etc. Today she played this solo CD by Mark Knopfler, whose voice I recognize anywhere, knowing that I am a client that goes for just about anything.

So I was thinking, she is getting married soon, and I would like to surprise her with a CD that is still appropriate for work but not what you would expect. Something soothing but not necessarily instrumental or classically influenced...I was surprised how nice ol' Mark sounded in that setting...organic, earthy, and very soothing.

Any suggestions? I can give her one CD for a gift, and put a list together for her to check out on her own.

Secret Garden has some wonderful, soothing music. You can try samples here:

Here's some information about the writers/performers:

I think the album I have is "Songs from a Secret Garden"; it has "Nocturne" on it and several others that are beautiful.

If you like chimes, there's at least one album out there that is filled with various windchimes. I also have a couple of cassettes that have environmental sounds such as a walk through the woods or in the snow; birdsongs; and Celtic music that has nature sounds in it.

Our Wal-Mart has a section near the candles that has a lot of different New Age and other types of music, including panpipes, which are very soothing.

Someone suggested Enya; the group she split from, Clannad, also might be worth trying. Yet another possibility is Loreena McKennit. I agree about the "Twin Peaks" soundtrack, which has a lulling, soothing quality. Even the songs are rather low-key.

The Celestine Prophecy by Christopher Franke.

Or anything by Brian Eno or Philip Glass.

Also, Angelo Badlamente (sp?). He does a lot of David Lynch film soundtracks - the OST for the TV series "Twin Peaks" is hauntingly soothing.

Or how about nature sounds - no music? Like ocean waves, tropical rainforest, etc. Tough to find without music playing with it, but they're nice to create a mood when you can find them.

a number of Enigma's song (particularly Mcmxc A.D.), is acceptable, as is song by using Enya and Spiritualized, and a few, yet no longer all, of the songs by using coastline homestead, Bon Iver, Jonsi, and pink Martini.
