I have the perfect current event for you to do your report on! The Jena Six refers to a group of six black teenagers who have been charged with the beating of a white teenager at Jena High School in Jena, Louisiana, United States, on December 4, 2006. The six black students were initially charged with attempted second degree murder and conspiracy to commit second degree murder.

The beating involved a black student that struck a white student in the head, knocking him unconscious. A group of black students then repeatedly kicked the white student. The school superintendent stated that the attack was no ordinary schoolyard fight. "It was a premeditated ambush and attack by six students against one. The victim attacked was beaten and kicked into a state of bloody unconsciousness."[1] The incident followed a number of racially-charged incidents in the town, notably when three white students hung nooses from a tree at Jena High school following a black student asking if he could sit under the tree.

The most important US Supreme Court case concerning the death penalty in recent history will be heard this session. They are going to consider the Constitutionality of lethal injection or whether it is "cruel and unusual punishment. They just decided to hear 2 Kentucky cases last week that will have an impact on all the states that share the same execution method.

Here is one article summarizing the issue:

Look at the Congress trying to create the "Fairness Doctrine". Google it and see how they are trying to reinstate the policy of if one person says something on air than another opposing viewpoint must be heard.

Freedom of Speech
