He was a great man and helped America through some rough economic time, still World War 2 did get America out of the depression

It's funny how people refer to "socialism" like it's a terrible, awful thing. A little socialism is what keeps a society from being in a state of anarchy. Would you prefer a government that sits idly by and does absolutely nothing to keep a society fair and balanced?

And yes, he did help to save America from the depression. The "New Deal" (which you refer to as nasty, awful, socialism) created thousands of new jobs and put money back into people's pockets. Yes, WWII also did the same, but you don't thank the enemy for a war. If that's the case maybe we should have given Saddam a full pardon and a vacation in Aruba for boosting our national spending beyond anything before.

The stock market had crashed. The American public was destitute and starving. The bread lines were a reality for the majority of American households. FDR established the systems to put people to work and give them an income and a way to have a place to live AND pride in themselves and America. The infrastructure of America was being strengthened. The war was not a by-product of FDR, rather a direct effect of abuse of power in the Fascist empires.

What FDR believed in did look like socialism at the time, but compared to what we consider normal today, it was rather mild.

You are right that WW II changed the U.S. economy (I hope you are watching "The War" on PBS, it has some great stuff on that), but let's not give Hitler credit, please. He was not a force for good.

I agree with Lisa B. The social programs FDR introduced were very modest by today's standards. The one thing Republicans and Democrats seem to agree on nowadays is that big goverment is a good thing.
