Excellent question and it's complicated....

1. The far right understand that the vast majority of Americans get what little bit of political facts they do get from 10 second sound-bytes. Seriously, think about how much garbage of twisted truth is out there that ppl REALLY BELIEVE was said, done or is just true...

Example, how many times over the past month+ have we heard on the news, etc... that Harry Reid said, ".. the war is lost..." I happened to be listening to CSPAN that day and what Reid actually said was, "... if we continue down Bush's path then the war in Iraq is lost..."

Now, think about that. That is like me driving north to get somewhere south and you calling me and saying, "if you keep driving in that direction, you won't get to where you are going." You are not telling me am forever lost. You are telling me if I don't fix my direction THEN I will stay lost.

2. The Republican party also has been using prejudices since the 70s to motivate their base .The irony is that Rove has admitted this on many occassions. He said once that motivating ppl to vote against an issue is 10 times more powerful than getting them to vote for an issue.

3. Lack of real facts in the news. For example, no news program, except PBS's Newshour, has shown what Reid really said. NOT A ONE of the many times ppl have said that false statement by Reid has any news person corrected them.

4. Ppl don't do their own research and lack education. This one falls with the other answers.

So anyways, your question was WHY? Those are part of why...

I know it angers me... because I've had to pay a price in life over this issue... from other ppl's ignorance. Special rights blah blah blah bologna. I just want the SAME rights other taxpaying citizens have... nothing more. I had to live in Mexico for a year once because my significant other had extended her visitors visa the max number of times and we refused for her to become an illegal... would have been simple for a STRAIGHT person because they could marry and be recognized on the federal level.

To many people -- anyone asking for something they don't have is like asking for a "special right" ....

To those people -- the concept if ending discrimination and treating everyone as individuals -- that doesn't enter their consciousness -- they cannot conceive of everyone truly being equal and having the same rights.

So, anything which changes the status quo (which gives rights to some but not others) -- they think is bad.

I thought the part after the "if..." was going to say:

"... they have graduated from 3rd grade?"
