Well if you could take your pommel off in the first place, it narrows it down a bit.
I wouldn't be a Japanese sword, because they don't usually have a pommel. If it was a re-enactor/ darkage sword the pommel is usually peined on.
So this sounds like a screw fitting, sounds like you've stripped the thread. If this is the case you would need to fill the pommel with weld, drill and re-tap. Also make sure the thread on the tang is clean.
When screwing it back on, gently turn the pommel in the reverse direction of the thread, it will "clunk" when it gets to the start of the thread, then turn following the direction of the thread.

If its a fencing weapon there is a scew in the back of the pommel. if its a japanese sword there should be a bambo plug about 1/3 up the grip. Most other weapons use the counter weight to screw the pommel to the blade. If this does not help you might want to include what type of weapon it is. Good Luck

If it is a threaded tang and the threads are screwed up, you will have to run a die over them and clean them up or perhaps run a tap in the pommel to clean that up. If the tang is peened (ie. the tang goes through the pommel then hammered over to hold it together) then you might be screwed. It may not be long enough anymore to re-peen it.
