i'm not really good at solving application problems. these are the two problems that i'm having trouble with. please help! thanks in advance.

1. The length of a rectangular jewerly box is 3 in. more than twice the width. The perimeter is 36 in. Find the length and the width.

2. A photograph measures 8 in. by 10 in. Earl put it in a frame that is 2 in. wide. Find the area pf the frame and its outside perimeter.

1. Let the width be x, so the length will be (2x+3), so

x + (2x+3) + x + (2x+3) = 36, so

6x + 6 = 36, so

6x = 30, so

x = 5.

So the width is 5 inches, and the length is 2x5 + 3 = 13 inches

Hope this helps, now try the next one on your own and post your answer later, someone will tell you if it`s correct.

For the first one: Ok, so
l = 3 + 2x
w = x
I substituted everything, then wrote it out like so:
(3 + 2x) + (3 + 2x) + x + x = 36
Since perimeter is length + width + length + width
Then I combined it all,
So
6x + 6 = 36
6x = 30
x = 5

Then you plug that in so
l = 3 + 2(5)
w = 5

So the length is 13 and the width is 5.

First one is a system of equations type problem.

Translating what it says into formula, you get:
L=2W+3
2L+2W=36

Solve the above equations. The easiest way to do this is, put the first equation into the second as L is conveniently there.

Second one is just a thinking excercise.

What's the are of the picture if it's 8 by 10?
What's the area of the entire frame if 8 by 10 fits into it with 2 inches to spare all around?

Hint: 8 + 2 + 2 (size of picture + space at the right and space at left)
10 + 2 + 2 (size of picture + space at the top and space at the bottom)

If you subtract the first from the second, you get what you want.

idk abotu the second one but the first one is length=3 width=15
i know this because i took 3 and doubled it becasue there is 2 sides to a box
then i took 6 and subtracted it from 36 and got 30
then i cut 30 in half to get 15
then i checked myself
15+15+6=30

hope that helps
