The organisms slow down the use of resources or stored energy during periods when they cannot get enough to sustain themselves. By going dormant and slowing down energy use, it allows them to last longer and survive a long winter.

Each of these adaptations is for the lower amount of light(shorter days and sun lower in the sky) and the cold of winter. In hibernating they slow their metabolism down to use less energy and the need to maintain higher temperature. With less light a tree that sheds it leaves does not need the energy to keep the leaves from freezing, also less surface area protects it from high winds. Thick fur keeps animals warm in winter and allow some animals to live without hibernating

Animals slow down their metabolism in a season with little food and low temperatures.
Plants with wide leaves (not conifers) avoid to have them frozen by temperatures below 0° by absorbing and saving all their nutrients and let them detach from the branches. Also. the fallen leaves form a layer which protects the roots from freezing.
