What does this mean for me. I do genealogy research so I know I don't have any gay relatives. I also heard you do not genes from your cousins. I have one 1st cousin that is gay and that is it.

Your just from a predominately straight family, and you broke the mold it was bound to happen eventually.

Hi Daniel! It's not the genes that are important. Take a look at the research they did on male AIDS victims. The autopsies showed, overwhelmingly, that there is a difference in structure in one part of brain. Hence the question...do you think you were born Gay, becomes moot! That is not to say that there are some people in the community that became Gay due to circumstances that even they cannot explain but each of knows, down deep inside which they are!

Daniel...don't talk yourself back into denial again. We all are what we are...and trying to change that has been the downfall of many, many wonderful people. Thank God you are coming up and out in an age where some of the doors that were locked...are now open to us.

While promising, research regarding the "gay gene" is not conclusive yet. There are several theories, but the prevailing one is that it is sex-linked (carried on the X chromosome), almost identical to color blindness.

This means that if you are male, the trait will run on your mother's side of the family (if at all) because you could not have got it from your father since he was the one who had to give you your Y chromosome. This will only affect males in the family, though, as women the women are "carriers" of this gene (have the alternative allele but do not have it in their phenotype because they have another X chromosome to cancel out the trait).

This coincides with the "gay uncle" theory, stating that if you have a gay uncle on your mother's side, you are more likely to be gay. (Or something like that, I didn't look too deeply into it since it seemed like a bunch of crap.) This is because they inherited the "gay gene" from their mother and there is the possibility that your mother (your gay uncle's sister) passed this gene onto you.

If there were any kind of pattern in your family with homosexuality, it would be found on your mother's side. While the "gay uncle" theory is almost facetious, it does illustrate this point.

So far, I'm the one and only homosexual on both sides of my enormous family. Remember, genetic research on homosexuality is not conclusive, and I will admit that as a homosexual no matter how much I want a definitive answer because I try to remain unbiased. If genetic research were conclusive, then 100% of identical twins whose twin was gay would also be gay instead of (if I'm not mistaken) 60%. While it is widely agreed upon by the medical community (unless you're a bible-thumping Christian fundie) that it is NOT a choice, research indicates it is a complex combination of genetic, environmental, hormonal, and cognitive factors.

In the words of Diana Ross...maybe...
"Flo, how do you know?"

There has not yet, possibly never will be, an identified Gay Gene...and I hope it stays that way.
If you have a genetic reason for anything then someone will want to call it a "disease" and want to "cure" it...and I do not want to be cured.

BTW...as far as I know, for at least 3 generations, I am the only gay person in my family on either side...though my cousin probably should have been gay, he just got married and miserable and divorced and miserable. If that is related to his being gay or not I do not know.

:-)

I like what Glen P said about people trying to fix it. DNA is one thing genes are another DNA is where all the inherited diseases come from and if being gay is a disease then they should have found a cure before AIDS and HIV right.
Dude you are who you are and the whole family thing is except it or not. I had an aunt well she was married to my moms brother and they had kids well she ended up divorcing him to be with another woman. She tried to be straight it just wasn't in her jeans. The family loved her just the same except for my uncle and grandfather.
Point is just be who you are and don't worry about what others say. being gay is becoming more acceptable just like interracial dating and marriage. It is those who do not accept change that are the ones who are truly missing out on the great things people have to offer.

The geneology that you are refering to is not the same as DNA Geneology that there is NO way you know if a family member or relitve is gay or not.

I dont think it means much. Plus....how do you know no one in your family tree is not gay?? You, yourself know how it is.....people don't always come out of the closet. People keep secrets.

So, I would not make much of it at all.

i don't think that their is a gay gene at all. i just think that people are just born that way. think of it like the lotto and your prize is being gay.
