Anytime pressure and/or heat is applied to rocks or sediments a metamorphic rock can be produced. If a schist has more pressure applied to it, the result could be a gneiss. I have seen schists with three generations of metamorphism recorded in them. These rocks occur when a continent collides with another continent.

Think about what causes metamorphisim (heat and pressure). So if a metamorphic rock rose towards the surface at some point (upheval or some other type of disturbance) then was forced back down it would be re-metamorphose due to geothermal gradient. Also the deeper the rock goes the more pressure that will be exerted above it because of gravity. It would cause the minerals to further melt and then recrystalize, creating those bands and breaks that we are so used to seeing in many metamorphic rocks.
