I believe it is mainly for national pride and prestige. According to a Chinese government official I heard interviewed on NPR, China has been the greatest and most powerful and most technologically advanced nation on Earth for 28 of the last 30 centuries. Only in the last 2 centuries has China fallen behind other nations. China is working very hard to resume their traditional and rightful position of dominance in the world theater for the 21st century, and going to the Moon is part of this process.

Maybe because the Chinese people are smarter and have a longer attention span than the American people. It was lack of support from the American people that caused the US to abandon the Apollo program. I just don't buy the argument that we learned everything important there is to know about the Moon in the few days the astronauts spent there.

Perhaps because the US hasn't shared any of the detailed science or the rocks with the Chinese.
Perhaps its to the Chinese can perfect their own technology.
Perhaps political reasons, maybe for other reasons they aren't willing to share with us.
