If you want an "A," you'd better write a flowery prose about how right the ACLU is, regardless of what logical thinking may dictate. Why? There's a 98% chance that any school teacher is a leftist, in full agreement with anything the ACLU stands for, especially when asking such a question.

'Domestic terrorism' is a term that is now legally defined by the PATRIOT Act. By defining 'terrorism' in the broadest possible terms, the PATRIOT Act gives undue power to police, the FBI, federal prosecutors, and the federal govt. in general.

Nearly anyone protesting anything too loudly can be considered to be engaging in 'domestic terrorism'. The govt. sends people to anti-war marches and rallies and photographs people in the crowd. These people can then be investigated, dossiers started on them, their phones tapped, their library records subpoenaed, and other aspects of their privacy abused.

This is counter to the 4th amendment which says that before a person can be 'searched' or property seized, there must be a 'probable cause' to believe that the person has been involved in a crime, and a warrant must be issued stating the cause. You can't investigate someone just because he holds an opinion.

This power has been abused by 'law and order' presidents many times before! Year after the Vietnam War, it was found through 'FOIA' (Freedom of Information Act) requests that dossiers were started on many anti-war activists, phones were tapped, neighbors were interviewed and even co-workers and bosses. In some cases worse abuses took place, like breaking into the office of the psychiatrist of Daniel Ellsberg, a famous anti-war writer.

Now it's happening again with a different president and a different war. The president has used 'terrorism' as a justification to suspend habeas corpus, to arrest people off the street and hold them indefinitely without their rights to due process, without even charging them with anything.

The purpose of the ACLU is to protect the rights granted to American citizens by the Constitution. Conservatives like to demonize the ACLU as a far-left organization, as communists or just subversives, but defending constitutional rights is all they do, and they work for both sides alike--for instance they defended the rights of the KKK and neo-nazis to free speech. It's really sad to think that today anyone who cares about protecting the Bill of Rights is bashed as a 'liberal' or 'extremist'.

Spend some time on the ACLU website (http:aclu.org). Do a search for 'domestic terrorism' and read what they have to say. It will be in very easy-to-understand language.

Terrorism is a tactic -- a way of committing a crime and forcing political change by using violence to induce terror.

Domestic terrorism just means terrorism by citizens or residents of the country -- rather than terrorism by foreigners. And in the US, we've been hit by domestic terrorist attacks about as often in the past several decades as we've been hit by foreign terrorist attacks.

Yet, the focus seems to be exclusively on foreign terrorists -- and specifically, Muslim foreign terrorists -- despite the fact that less than 30% of all terrorist attacks against the US in the past 40 years have been by Muslim foreign terrorists.

The ACLU thinks that we should be more concerned with the crime --- terrorism --- in ALL its forms, rather than with one particular ethnic or religious group;.
