So if I buy a 2005 reg band G car what do I pay?
It says on the second table that is is £165 for 6 months and £300 for 12 months for cars registered on or after 23/03/06. so what do people whose cars are registered before 2006 pay?

Band G only applies to cars first registered on or after 23rd March 2006. If a car was registered between 1st March 2001 and 22nd March 2006 inclusive the maximum band is Band F - therefore even if the CO2 emissions are greater than 225g/km, the tax will still be charged at Band F prices.

That is why there is no top limit for Band F in the table.
It also means there is no such thing as a 2005 reg Band G car.

The tax is based on engine capacity for cars registered before 2001 and on CO2 emissions after that date.

Band G is a new band, for cars prior to 23/3/06 use band F.
