If I jiggle it in Park, it will start most of the time. I need to step on the gas immediately or it will not start. Also, it seems to be more responsive the faster I turn the ignition. The problem seems to be getting worse and I have to try multiple times. The car won't start in Neutral. How do I know if the problem is with my Safety Switch or with my Starter? If I do need to replace the switch, what would a reasonable price be?

The same thing happened to my 1998 Corolla about 2 years ago. It did end up being the started switch. I got a pretty good deal getting it replaced, it ran only about $200.00 if memory serves. The best way to find out what's wrong with your vehicle is to have a factory trained technician properly diagnose the problem. Since I've been there and I work for Toyota, it sounds like your starter is going bad. Good luck!

One thing you can do even though you've been driving the car a number of years is to review what your car's owner's manual says is the exact procedure to start your car. For example, does it say you have to have it in park or neutral? Does it say you have to have your left foot on the brake pedal? (try that, by the way) I'm sure it says to keep your right foot off the accelerator pedal, so try that even though you know that doesn't work. Make sure you have your seat belt on if that's required to start the car.

If, when you turn the key and NOTHING happens, it could be the key switch, neutral safety switch, starter, starter solenoid, bad battery connection, bad ground wire.

If, when you turn the key, the engine turns over but won't start, it's none of those listed above.

Get it to a mechanic fast that's just weird and could be dangerous.
