Why would a pensioner use a banks services rarther than a building societys?

Perhaps because they have a Bank Account ?
(and do not have a Building Society Account ...)

Perhaps because they 'trust' the banks (eg Barclays, ) more than the Building Societies (eg Northern Rock) ?

Beacause cheques clear quicker with a bank and they offer a wider range of services.
