Yet, at the same time they are funding directly and indirectly the advancement of open source software projects that enable people inside and outside China to work to evade those controls.

So maybe in a way, the money that is made in China is being re-invested to disable to controls the governement puts up :)

Trust me, no American internet or media company wants to see the level of freedonm of speech that exists in China, and companies such as Yahoo and google are particularly qualified to enable ways to subvert the system, and they do just that!
