Apparently 60% of the American population is overweight and half of those are obese. I'm pretty sure that these statistics are correct; why is this so? I find it disgusting that one of the richest nations on earth, one of the few in which good nutrition is attainable, has descended to gluttony and sloth. Millions of people are gorging themselves on cheap snack food while hundreds of thousands are dying every week from lack of food/nutrition in poor countries. I realize that there are some genetic diseases that cause obesity, but seeing as this problem is only confined to America and several other countries (methinks the UK is also experiencing this problem), it is not the main root.

Sorry, that I misrepresented the obesity problem in the UK. It is indeed mainly childhood obesity. Also, so far laziness does seem to be a logical answer.

Why? Because of lazyness. I believe people from the past periods were thin because they walk and do a lot more physical activities than today.

1. We walk a lot less than people in other countries and are chained to our desks at a much higher rate than Europeans. When you're working yourself to death, you're more likely to hit vendoland for lunch and/or dinner (I've watched the sun rise, set and then rise again from my office on more than one occasion). Some places have a gym on campus (like my office) which is great but a lot of places do not.
2. Good nutrition isn't affordable for every one. If you're a single parent on a budget, you're going to buy the super size bag of doritos before you buy four apples because you're spending the same amount of money but the doritos will go a lot farther.
3. We have a lot more preservatives and other things that increase the calories but have no nutritional value.

Here are a number of factors:

Availablity of cheap, low-nutrition food
Lack of exercise
Stress
Boredom
Laziness (I've actually heard people say they only want to live in one-story houses because they don't want to have to climb up and down stairs)
No real incentives for getting exercise. Many communities have no sidewalks and they are laid out in such a way that it would be difficult and time consuming to walk to a neighbor's house that might only be a block away.

American food is just that good... and with all this technology people get lazier and lazier. There are excuses for some, such as diseases and conditions. For the rest of us... it's all the food and lack of mobility.

...it is a lot of reasons, fast food, drive thrus, delivery...America makes it too easy to get fat. Healthy food is usually costs more and sometimes doesnt taste as good(subway turkey sandwich $7)(i think it tastes better) Fast food is cheap and for the most part, is really good(McD double cheeseburger 99cents)
