Oh man... I think I was 11 when I read that book, but it was a good one...

Fear, power, loss of a structured atmosphere... these are all themes that I found in that book, but if you write something that backs up what YOU personally think the theme is, then that's what will count in your essay. Stories read different to every person. :)

A group of boys get ship wrecked and continue life on an island. Their characters are stretched and twisted in the story and they go through experiences where they have to find a balance in the group.

I read this book and hated it...It's like That everyone has an inner-savage within them and society has a secure control over it but when society isn't present anymore, then the inner-savage can control you...
Or something along those lines.

but based on what other people usually say, isn't it that kids are evil and they all turn on each other when they aren't supervised?

Survival of the fittest kinda thing? The lack of society turns kids into monsters?

But I haven't read it, so I'm just going on references to it.

To me, it symbolizes how transient civilization is. Children that have been brought up to be civilized, to have rules and structures very quickly revert to barbarism and to the adage that the strong are the survivors and the ones that rule.

That wihtout adults, children will form a society, just as adults and humans have done for ages.
