The kids like to hang out food for the birds in the winter which we would normally buy. I'm wondering if there is a more economical way to feed the birds.

I'd heard you can use bacon fat mixed with seeds, is that right?

you could try cereals in honey too, they like that. just a lil honey not soaked.

any bread put out should be dampened to make it easier to swallow.

cheapest idea, plant a bush that has berries in winter. you and the birds gain that way.

Any fat mixed with any seed is called suet. They go for it in fall and spring. There is a cage made to hold commercial suet, you can make yous to fit the cage, or look at it in the store and go home and make your own. I use a commercial one because the birds tear apart a home made in no time.

yes, they like fat for winter months. Fat that has been trimmed off any meat would work, not just bacon fat.
