Actually Im in mid Cal (between Sac and SF) but I want a front yard that is reasonably green colored without putting alot of water on it in the summer (unless sometimes grey-water). I wouldnt be against a return to something that was originally in the area also as long as its grassy-short.

And no I dont want to put in rock and paint it green.

I was going to suggest you look up xeroscaping, [low water plants] but that might be a little extreme for central CA.

I really think Tamarisk trees should be illegal here. they suck up water and put it into the air.

One solution: Plant an Achillea (yarrow) lawn. You can buy the seed in bulk and you just mow it like a lawn and you must do it before the Achillea flowers or it won't be a lawn any longer! It's soft under foot and drought tolerant. It's a good choice.

There is a ton of info. on the net about doing this. You could also contact your local nursery to get assistance in this too. Good luck.

If you want was was there originally, stick with grass. Just let it brown in summer. It will come back green every winter when it rains. It has the advantage of not needing mowing all summer. You can add some clover as well, so it is self fertilizing

Try installing Aptenia.

It's a fresh, spring-green color, has small, magenta-colored flowers. It has a fleshy leaf and stem, so does not require much water.

Green thumbs up to you!
