Could schizophrenia have anything to do with the fact that your brain is not done developping until the age of 25. Because is it a known fact that schizophrenia only develops after the age of 25. I saw a question about the brain ending it's formation at the age of 25, personality wise, so I was thinking, could it be related? Please only serious answers?!?

Schizophrenia is a serious and challenging medical illness, an illness that affects well over 2 million American adults, which is about 1 percent of the population age 18 and older. Although it is often feared and misunderstood, schizophrenia is a treatable medical condition.

Childhood schizophrenia is rare, affecting an estimated one in 40,000 children under the age of 13. During early teen years, the rate of schizophrenia onset in the general population begins to increase, and the peak rates of onset lie between the ages of 15 and 30.

Objective: To characterize the epidemiology of schizophrenia.
Results: Each year 1 in 10 000 adults (12 to 60 years of age) develops schizophrenia.

Reality therapy stresses warm human involvement; shuns pedagogic psychiatric categories such as dementia praecox, paranoid schizophrenia, and manic depression; avoids examination and analysis of early trauma or past history; holds patients responsible for their own recovery; and, in fact, rejects the idea that there is such a thing as mental illness.

Szasz believes that mental illness differs from organic illness, and he calls the former "problems of living." He believes psychiatrists have glossed over these differences and continue to treat mental disturbances as medical problems. They impose the definition "mentally ill" on a person instead of treating the illness as an objective fact.

The first point is that not only is mental illness not 'like any other illness,' as conventional wisdom now has it, but that mental illness does not exist.
Psychiatry is neither a science nor a healing art but is rather a powerful arm of the modern nation state.

I've never heard that there was an age at which the brain stops developing. This arbitrary number of 25 does not sound like a fact, but rather as a guesstimate.

I DO think that there are schizo kids, so please list your source so I can read the info you have.

Also consider that there are conditions where people only get schizo when they drink alcohol. When sober, they are fine.

EDIT:
Here's what I found on age --
"Schizophrenia affects both men and women. It is often first seen in men between ages 15 and 25. It is mostly first seen in women between ages 25 and 35."

With this information, showing that men present signs BEFORE age 25, then I would dispute your statement that schizophrenia is related to the development stage of the brain.

first of all crazy del is wrong - it can NOT be cured by medicine. It can be successfully TREATED but there is no cure for schizophrenia. It is a very very hard disease to treat.

My grandmother has it. She has battled with medicine all her life and it is still very hard for her. She finally found a medicine in her 50's that started working really well, but her dose has been upped so much over the years, and she still hears voices at times. If the voices tell her that she can't walk, then she collapses when she tries to stand up. It rules her brain at times.

As far as the 25 thing, I don't know but i've heard of people having it as early as 22 years old. As far as kids having it?? I don't think so - never heard that - always heard it was early 20's (equal op_'s answer said kids have it)

***btw - very interesting question!

Psychotic symptoms (such as hallucinations and delusions) usually emerge in men in their late teens and early 20s.
Women in their mid-20s to early 30s.
They seldom occur after age 45 and only rarely before puberty.
Although cases of schizophrenia in children as young as 5 have been reported.
It does have to do with the fact that your brain is developing because when your brain changes somethings don't go in their normal places.
Schizophrenia is a very severe, and disabling brain disorder but it affects only around 1 percent of Americans.

I don't want to sound rude, but I'm not sure where you got your information from. Its all wrong.
Schizophrenia often first presents in adolescence, with the first psychotic break usually happening before the age of 30.

The brain also continues to develop far into adulthood. However, there is a huge surge of development that occurs in adolescence.

being normal in a not so normal world is a very tough challenge. Be normal or not, just be it. You will definitely find someone crazy enough to jive on whatever disease or incompetency that you have. For sure you are thinking alot, I suggest you free your mind of worries and forget hurtful past. Unwind, take a vacation. Have a pet, share someone your love and dont think about so many things. There are alot of stupid things that happens for no reason. Dont bother to find out, that will surely make 50% of the population crazy.

Schizophrenics often have problems handling relationships in their early 20's, and get too stressed out by them, which is usually what sparks any kind of schizophrenic behavior. So it is plausible, that they are not ready for adult relationships at this age because of what you say, but have to try to adapt to them because they are now at the age where everyone expects them to act as an adult.

Not sure where you read that, but it is incorrect.

In fact, in the majority of schizophrenics, the illness first presents itself in adolescence or early adulthood (although it can present at ANY time).
