4 to 4 1/2 quarts full. Over full oil may foam up and the engine will not get oil because of air. Too much oil will build up pressure and blow out through seals, IE; Pan Gasket, Head Gasket, Valve Cover Gasket, Timing Cover Gasket.

Changing and adding oil, if engine calls for 4Q. add 3 1/2, run engine for 15 seconds, check oil on dipstick & Then add to full line. (Two Lines on Dipstick, Bottom line is add, Top line is Full)

Well, off-hand I will guess that the Eclipse requires somewhere between 4.7 and 5 quarts of oil depending upon whether you also change the oil filter at the oil change (the empty filter requiring a little more oil to fill). Still, this is just a guess and you are best off looking in your manual or calling the dealer.

Now as to whether there can be too much oil, the answer is yes. Too much oil can increase oil pressure beyond the deigned limitations for seal, and can submerge turning parts in the lower end (crankshaft for example) creating too much resistance, foaming, etc.

how much depends on exact engine and such, parts store can tell u, too much, yes, you can over filling can cause hydro lock ( your motor might turn over, might not) as in over pressurizing, not a chance, your oil pump is only going to put out so much pressure , it does not gain pressure from just having more fluid in resevoir(oil pan)

I believe the correct level is usually marked on the dipstick. Your manual will tell you how much oil to put in and where the filler cap is.

Open the glove box, take out the owner's Manual and see what it says.
