We are conquerors, not a united group of states. We destroyed and killed those who lived here before us. Why would we claim otherwise? We preach peace and democracy and freedom when it fits our mood. But the birth of our very nation was carved out of the blood and souls of those undeserving victims who came before us. Why do we lie to ourselves? Aren't we just another empire like the many in history before us?

Do we continue to expand ourselves? Why are we fighting now?

My father is full-blooded and fought for this "country" in two wars. He was wounded and received the purple heart for his actions. I speak for myself, it is true, not for an entire people. This is a question geared towards all people. The emperor is money, folks. If you have it, you own this nation. That's why Big Oil seems to be expanding our borders even now. Just like land used to be the big factor back in the expansionist period when the US government made false treaties with the Native nations of this land. I am educated. I have studied American history, beyond your usual high school texts. I know how my ancestors were treated. If this empire did not commit cultural genocide upon the natives of this land, then why have we lost our languages? Why have we lost our ways? We know so little about pre-european native cultures. Why is that? Because the europeans were greedy. And when America took over, they had no regard for the people. The US wanted the land at all costs.

I agree that the foundation of this country was to take this land from others and that is not good. nonetheless, emperors were not choosen by voters like us presidents are, at least not to my knoledge. Furthermore, I believe that if u compare the standards of most countries (on matters of democracy, freedom, free market) the US has one of the highest standards, or would u like to live under a brutal regime like those of muslim countries?? the US fights because otherwise the bad guys (or the worse if u like) who want to shape the world after their radical religion will win, and then we all would be ****** up!

If we are does that de-legitimize us as a nation?

Is the Roman Empire not remembered in a more positive light than negative for the fact that it was violently expansionist at the same time it was innovative politically and in terms of engineering and otherwise?

We're actually both -- at one time we were a united group of states -- though we're not very united at the moment.

But yes, we're also conquerors and rapidly on the way towards becoming an empire -- Puerto Rico, Guam, and now Iraq -- how many independent countries can the US control as protectorates before we acknowledge we're building an empire?

No it isn't. If we were an empire we would tax our territories. We don't. That's pretty much the point of an empire, take over an outside area throw a puppet government in there and tax it / pilage it's economic resources for the betterment of the home state. You could make that case during the American expansion in the past. No way now. We pour out into more than we get from any of our territories (or places with US pressence).

yes, and even if most Americans don't agree, it's how most the rest of the world sees it. It is in keeping with the British and Dutch model which was run for and by monied interests. It worth asking where are those Empires now?

Oh, the teenage angst is palpable

The entire world from the beginning of time is a story of subjugation and conquering. Even your beloved "native americans" engaged in it. Singling out America for such things is childish.
