Take rock music, for example- why should anyone who listens to it be labeled "punk rock", "goth", "emo", or "scene"?

It's just music.

That's how Society runs!! Its a way to define people!! When people ask me about the music I listen to....and once I tell them, they reply: "Ohh you must be some mean A** Metal head!" I get that alot that I really dont care anymore! Alot of people say...."Well I dont listen to Metal cuz its satanic!" Which that right there is ignorant. And I dont want to talk to Ignorant people!!! So in other words, they do it to see in what catagory each person falls in and where they might fit in!!! Like For Example, I hang around with so-called "Metal Heads" cuz we like the same music and we click. Thats how the rest of the other genres must work!! But then again these are only my thoughts and I could be wrong!

It's mostly a teenager thing. Teens will often pick a social clique they like best, or get introduced to it by another friend, and they'll take on all the styles and tastes of that particular group. People at that age are still trying to figure out who they are, and as a result tend to be insecure, so they make it a point to label themselves and others. This is why there are social cliques in high school, because everyone acts like they are better than everyone else even though deep down they are afraid that they aren't as good as them. As I've gotten older (now in my mid-20's) people my age seem to listen to a little bit of everything. Sometimes I'll be shocked by what certain people like, because you wouldn't think they'd be into it based on their appearance. You also get more mature and more open-minded as you get older. In just 6 years, there are things I like now that I never would've liked in high school.

Yes, however now not dramatically. I'll without doubt be extra eager to socialize with a man or woman in the event that they concentrate to the identical kind of song as me, considering that it is such an foremost side of my existence, however it definately does not preclude the truth that I socialise with them. Having mentioned that, the one song I rather hate is hip-hop, rap and dubstep, so another kind of song is most likely ok. Preferably rock/steel despite the fact that. I feel this occurs mostly considering that it is whatever that strongly informs what 'clique' you are in in society. Things like your favorite kind of animal would possibly not routinely make persons feel you are wierd, however in case you concentrate to hardcore thrash steel, persons that do not concentrate to that have a tendency to appear down on you just a little extra. Mainly considering that of the media to be sincere! I'm now not being attentive to whatever correct now, however the final factor I listened to used to be the Sex Pistols. My artist of the week could need to be Sex Pistols. I've listened to them nearly non-give up all week. Absolute legends.

Everyone belongs to a social grouping...EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN THE WORLD! It is a mammalian trait we developed in or evolution, the pack, the herd - what ever you want to call it.

Music and it's openly identifiable genres allows people to express who they are and what social/economic group they come from or would like to come from in some cases. Everyone needs something to follow or be a part of. Even the weird emo kids who are trying to rebel against everything all look the same and act the same and believe the same moral structures. It is very rare that you truly find someone who is 100% unique.

I think the general answer is that people want to belong, to fit in, to conform, to be accepted and to be COOL.

I am a non-conformist so I don't care about being cool.

I listen to all kinds of music and it's a funny thing that even a genre of music I don't like, I may find a song in that particular genre that appeals to me - something special about the song (lyrics and music) will grab me even though that's not usually what I like to hear. I think if you are open-minded, you can find that many kinds of music can be appreciated and you can grow as a person.

It satisfies the need of some people who feel the need to separate certain aspects of music that they think is cool (such as heavy metal and punk rock) from the ones that seem uncool to them (such as soft rock and country).

Cause everyone who judges you by not even knowing you is just someone who thinks their better then you and 90% of the time they're just losers trying to be cool.

who knows......... well, when I was in high school, that's how most people were labeled - it defined which group you fit into, your common interests, etc......

Yes, its just music, but people (typically the younger generations) feel the need to label others, they like to draw the line and set up the boundaries between "us" and "them"
