My husband received a job offer in Houston and we are considering taking it. We live in Los Angeles and my husband and daughters are hispanic. We are considering moving to an area like Sugar Land but I am concerned about everything you hear about Texas and racism. I do not intend to be insulting or narrow minded, I just want to make sure my children (6 and 8 years old) can grow up in an area where they can be happy. Thank you in advanced for all your answers.

Just don't move to Katy, TX. lol

I'm from Sugar Land, though I don't live there now, I grew up there. Honestly, you'll find racism anywhere. But since Sugar Land is more diverse, people are much more open to a variety of backgrounds. It's also a nice city, one of the best cities to live in the US according to US News. It really is a great place for a family and you should fit in nicely. It's also a growing city with a thriving economy. Houston is great, too. And both cities have a thriving Hispanic population. I'm African American and my parents raised my brother and I in Sugar Land and we fit in fine. My friends and I love downtown Sugar Land: http://www.sugarlandtownsquare.com/ and Memorial Mall and the Galleria in Houston. There's so many things to do in Houston and Sugar Land is welcoming.

I'm extremely proud of my Texas roots and I wouldn't trade growing up in Sugar Land for the world. My parents are pretty conservative and their concerns were the same as yours, I'm sure. But it turned out to be a great decision. :0)

It's not like a small Texas town. Houston's a diverse city and it's suburb, Sugar Land , is a reflection of that.

Best of Luck to you!

Edit:

Caesar, if you've never lived in Houston, you shouldn't talk, because you sound truly ignorant to the ones that do.

Racism In Houston Texas

The south in general is racist - I've lived there for 26 years and it is pervasive. Some places are better than others, and it is probably different for hispanics than blacks in different areas. Texas is more racist toward hispanics than blacks, I've found.

That said, it probably isn't to the level that you should consider not moving there. Also, there are so many other hispancis there that you can probably speak spanish most of the day and most will understand you.

Go for it, and enjoy the new place and the new job. If there is racism there, it shouldn't be something that keeps you away from a great new opportunity like you have.

depends where you are in texas just like most places in the world if you're in a small town and you look different there might be some hostility towards you. most of the time in bigger cities theres more of a blend of cultures therefore theres more tolerance. obviously houston is a huge city also theres a big black and hispanic population in houston.

im in arlington tx a fairly big city 300,000+ and i'v exprienced some racism not enough to bother me greatly or pick up and move, i doubt its anymore than what i would get anywhere else. texas is developing a very strong latino influence much like california considering we share a border with mexico so there will be some similarities there

now traveling in texas like i said theres some small cities that i would probably not stop in but for the most part in houston you'll be fine and wont see too much of anything different than what you are currently experiencing

Well two people just got shot and somebody is shooting at us now? well they missed us so don't be a baby this happens everywhere lol

Hi, I live in Houston and i'm a white/non-hispanic female. Your daughters should have no problem with racism...we have a really big hispanic population, so if anything they would fit in fine.

everyone says the G.W. bush is racist but vincente fox (former president of mexico) said about how accepting of hispanics he was as the texas governor. so just based on that i'd say most of it is just stereotyping of the state. but a friend of mine from texas (who is as white as me) said it was refeshing to be in ohio since it was such an accepting area by comparison. so i really can't say much other than it probably depends on the area of where you're at.

I've been to houston on many business trips. big hispanic population. In milwaukee there is a big black population. I have to drive through those black people areas, and I do feel uncomfortable. in houston when I am driving in a hispanic populated area, I feel safe and don't feel out of place.
I stay at the intercontinental and visit the galleria every visit. I enjoy houston for what it's worth.

Personally I don't know, but I do know that you can not list a whole area as being racist even if 99.95% of their people are. There is still 5% to account for.
