Suirrels are pretty persistant, and will go after crocus flowers, tulip bulbs, lily bulbs, and that can be soooo frustrating. I seem to have pretty good success with keeping pests like these out of my garden, and there is still time to act! One, plant several garlic bulbs. I've ordered fall planting bulbs specifically, but any strong garlic will do. Separate individual cloves, and plant about an inch to inch and a quarter in the ground. If you live north of Parry Sound plant it an inch and a half. When the ground freezes cover them, & the tulip and other bulbs with leaves or mulch at about 2 inches thick. Also, chipmunks & squirrels do not like mint. Take some *peppermint plants, and prepare a pot or pail with at least one hole in the bottom, with soil. Plant some mint in it, water etc.
Dig a hole large enough to dump mint, pot and all at least 1 inch below surface of soil. Do this in a few spots if your garden is divided, or large. They'll tend to stay away. It is also very important to cover & tamp where ever you plant, for if it LOOKS LIKE YOU'VE BEEN DIGGING--THEY"LL COME
TO SEE what is buried there.
This you may also use to your advantage--make a couple of obvious holes, leave loose soil around-but bury things like garlic cloves, & bits of peppermint plant, they'll soon loose interest. So far I've only lost a very occasional bulb-some of which turn up in the forest, or an alternate bed. I guess I have not planted enough garlic. But if you are vigilant, it works!! A lot less cost & bother than spraying, & using chickenwire, & mesh baskets. That is a last resort!
*Mint spreads too voraciously, underground, so container plant them! Also:
Don't forget to plant lots of daffodils, in and around your other bulbs--this makes it harder for squirrels, as they're poisonous, (Daffodils/Narcissus) & they will lose interest fairly fast! You can even border your other bulbs with them, & it will keep them off your bed. In spring plant Nasturtian seeds all over your veggie garden along with Marigolds. The Nasturtiums keep out lots of critters, it is edible but they hate pepper smell/taste, & Marigolds keep many insect pests at bay.
Happy Gardening in 2008!

My wife has me lay a roll of chicken wire (poultry netting) over the area where the bulbs are. The squirrels can't get to them but the plants can find their way through the wire. The same thing works for pot as well.

Me too. I'm seriously considering a shot gun.

Best I have found so far is huge stones over all the pots - but that isn't going to work for bulbs.

You could try a 22 air rifle.
BTW squirrels are edible and are much tastier than rabbit.
