Most overwinter as eggs. That why just a few warm days in the middle of winter will result in adult flies.

The adult flies all die. They only live a few days anyway. The maggots that were laid in the dead animals go into hibernation when the flesh freezes. When spring comes and the flesh thaws, the maggots continue developing.

Don't they all just die, and then when it warms up, all the dormant maggots wake up and turn into flies.
