retaliation makes you moralistically just as wrong as the person you are retaliating against?

or do you think an eye for an eye is justifiable in certain cases?

No way will I get into this on P&S. Seriously why don't you rephrase it and submit in the philosophy or even psychology section? There are some good people there.
Your question is the sort of thing that can only be handled on a case by case basis. I guess that's why judges and lawyers and all those people were invented.
I debate this sort of thing with my metaphysical friends all the time. "What is your objective?' might be the first question they would ask you.
On a personal level I would say: Easy Does It. Resentment is Your Bigger and Very Worst Enemy. Remember?

Depends on what I am retaliating for. Honestly. I could write more.. but I would rather have a conversation about it because I am not in the mood for hate mail.

It's a tough call, I believe that two wrongs don't make a right, if it's on a personal level I prefer not to waste my energy or breath dropping to their level!! If someone commits a crime then they should pay for it and I have often wondered if it was an eye for an eye if there would be less crime!!

I think retaliation just means that they've gotten to you. People fell more angry when they're ignored. But, if some one has done something to my children.............God help them!!

I think an eye for an eye leaves the world blind.

I think, in most cases, turning the other cheek is the best way to go.

this is what I have told my husband and children...
"I'm always right no matter how wrong I am"
It keeps the home cozy and the way I want it :-)
