To honour bfs Father he would like to name his first son Pierson. I think I would prefer a compromise spelling of Pearson. What do you guys think: any preference for the spelling?

Thanks for the great pointers. We're not planning a baby anytime soon; at least not until after we get married. I love the sound of the name and think that it would go well with James or Douglas (my dad) as a middle name. Have a great day all

If it is to honor his father you should stick with the original spelling or it is not much of an honor.

If you have to use Pierson, I would definitely spell it Pierson, or Piersen. Pearson looks like it should be pronounced "pair-son". How about using Pierce, or James Pierson? I much prefer Pierson as a middle name.

I prefer Pierson over Pearson because it looks like pear. If this name was how his fathers name was spelled, he probably isn't going to want to compromise! Perhaps Pierson could be a middle name? Or you get to choose the middle name.

I think a compromised spelling is fine and still an honor. My bf's mom's name is Debra, but we talked about should we ever have a girl I wanted to use the "Biblical" spelling of Deborah (really I just like the 2nd spelling better- more classy imo). But I really like the Pierson spelling, it's a little different, it's cool.

Pearson was my maiden name, so I will always think of it as a last name. I actually like the Pierson spelling better.

Spelling-wise, they're both fine.
If you name the boy after his grandfather, then do not insult the man by changing the spelling. A name is a very personal thing and it's not spelled differently according to fashion.
Having said that, it's common to choose the first name yourself and the middle names are the grandparents. So no matter how old-fashioned the name is, it's preserved although in daily life it is only shown as initials.

I would vote for using Pierson as a middle name, because it doesn't really sound like a first name to me.

I prefer Pierson actually. It looks more like a first name. Pearson looks like a last name to me.

I am more familiar with the spelling "Pearson" but, to me, it's a surname.
If you are naming a child after someone, I'd use the original spelling.

I like just plain Person or Peirson. Ei loks more normal than ie, even though I-e is normally the right spelling. Pearson looks like it would be Pear-son, as it is spelled.
EDIT: oops, nevermind, not person! that's Per-son! I didn't realize that!
