Some people hear that and believe it, but if you read a little further into it, it says that the world may not be ending completely, but rather ending as we know it. We don't know whether this is in a good way or a bad way, but things we are doing today are leading us toward a big change increasingly fast. As a student in the up-and-coming nanotechnology, I can tell you that the things researchers are doing today are absolutely incredible. I am positive that technology is a big role in whatever this big change may be. In the Mayan calender, there are five 5,125 year cycles, and, as the Mayans predicted, a major change has occurred at the end of each cycle. For example, the last cycle was predicted to begin in 3113 B.C. As it turns out, the first city, Uruk, was erected in Mesopotamia at approximately the same time. The first Egyptian dynasty and the Hindu Kali Yuga also began at around that time, as well as the division of time into days, minutes, and seconds, which is a major issue with the Mayans. Of course, it could be that all these predictions are just a big coincidence, but it really makes you think.
I do believe that there is a good chance that there will be a major change sometime around 2012, but not necessarily the end of the world. And yes, I am a Christian.

If you're interested, a great place to read about this is here:

"On 13.0.0.0.0 [Dec. 21, 2012], the December solstice sun will be found in the band of the Milky Way. We can call this an alignment between the galactic plane and the solstice meridian. This is an event that has slowly converged over a period of thousands of years, and is caused by the precession of the equinoxes. The place where the December solstice sun crosses the Milky Way is precisely the location of the "dark-rift in the Milky Way...'xibalba be' - the road to the underworld." --- Kinda scary eh?

A recent show on one of the TV channels (A&E, History?) was on this subject. The interesting thing was that they were able to correlate several OTHER "preditions" from other civilizations & cultures (English, American Indian) that also came up with the date of 2012. For the Mayan one, they believe it may be a case of "polar shift" happening that they are referring to. Even the Book of Revelation can be interpreted to come up with 2012 as an end date, if I remember correctly. So, having several of these "verify" the date is interesting, but I've always noticed that if people LOOK for something, they often tend to find it. Interpretation is so easy to twist to what you WANT to have happen.

Just do a search like this one:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=2012+end+of+world

and you will find LOTS of websites with interesting viewpoints.

If the mayas still were around, they would simply begin a new calendar cycle. It's like 2000 being the end of a cycle on our calendar. There were dire predictions then, and none came true. The same thing will happen in 2012.

Maybe the Maya simply got tired of counting? People like to read into such things much more than is necessary and are just generally paranoid about things like this. I dont believe that it is the end of the world, just that the Maya decided that a calendar extending several thousand years into the future was plenty for what they wanted to accomplish.

I have a possible thought that yeah, the world might end in 5 years. (yippe, my graduating year) But there has also been other predictions of this so-called "Armageddon" Given through numerous hints such as the Bible codes, the Mayan calendar, and even Nostradomus (who predicted ww1, ww2, and even 9-1-1) So, i guess you can believe what you want because our final judgement lies in God's hands.

Only God knows when the world is going to end....the Mayan calendar has squat to do with it.
Of course, the human race is doing its part to bring about Armageddon...we'll end up not having any clean air to breathe, or blow each other up.

Yes I have heard of this...

But the Jehovah's Witnesses beat them to it when the world ended in 1914. (or 1918, or 1925, or 1941 or 1942 or 1975...)

But seriously... Just because one group of people say that the world is going to end, does not mean that it is true. You remember how the whole Y2K thing got out of hand?

Anyways, it does not end... it just restarts as the thirteenth b'ak'tun

I think it's total nonsense; just because the Mayans couldn't/didn't look any further into the future doesn't mean it doesn't exist. What is the earth going to do - just go "poof" and disappear? Seems unlikely to me, at best.

I'm Jewish.

That is what the new word is. I guess we'll have to wait until 2012 and see what happens. If we get blown to bits, I am ready to die.
