I work in a rural hospital and several of our expecting mothers live over an hour away. As soon as you begin to contract regularly and feel uncomfortable, call your hospital and explain to them what you are feeling and they will recommend if you should come in or not. You can always just go in to be safe but with a long drive you probably don't want to go unnecessarily if they are going to send you home anyway. It is always appropriate to call. If this is your first baby you most likely will have plenty of time. Sometimes second, third, etc babies come quicker but most of the time you have enough warning because it takes awhile to completely dilate once your contractions start.
The worst that can happen is you wait too long or your water breaks and labor progresses quickly and you don't make it but that is very rare. If that did happen, call 911 and and ambulance will come to you.
If your water breaks, go to the hospital at that time whether or not you are contracting because you will be delivered in 24hrs.
I know it is probably a little scary being 45 min. away but you'll make it. Good luck.

The hospital I gave birth in is 45 min to an hour away (depending on traffic). I left my house as soon as my contractions began, they were 5 min apart from the beginning. I wish that I would have waited a little while or maybe went to a near by shopping center to walk around for a little bit before I went to the hospital because I ended up being in labor for 17 and a half hours and the hospital hallways got a really old really fast. You will be fine, go whenever your heart is telling you to go, which by the way may be a few times if this is your first ( I went 2 times before it was the real deal.) God bless you and congratulations.

Yes, that is enough time..provided you call the hospital and they confirm that you are in fact in labor. If you don't know you are in labor (it happens) you could be in for a LONG ride to Stanford.
Hopefully, you'll be able to tell and go even if it's a false alarm just to be safe.
I am 1 hr 15 min away from my hospital - I feel you! GOOD LUCK!!

The worst that could happen is you could dilate fast and have to have the baby on the side of the road. IT DOES HAPPEN. But in all fairness, it's very rare and more than likely you will be just fine. My sister's hospital of choice was 45 minutes away as well,,,and she made it in plenty of time and once there didn't have her's for several hours later. This was both pregnancies for her. I think you will be just fine.

If this is your first labor I would say you'll be fine. If it is your second, keep in mind, it will likely be half the time of your first. Labor length tends to get unpredictable after that. Have some comfortable pillows and maybe a blanket in the car. You might be more comfortable in the back seat where you could move around a little more. Best of luck!

Well, if that is where your hospital is at, what choice to you have. If you leave for the hospital as soon as you feel contractions, then you probably will have enough time. Most women are in labor for a while. The stories you hear about women giving birth in cars on the way to the hospital are because they waited too long after their contractions started.

Yes, that should be plenty of time. The worst that can happen is that your husband will have to rent a rinse-n-vac to clean out the car. I had three in the birth center and one in the car. Did you know that the infant mortality rate for babies born in a car is better than the national average? That is because if the baby is born in the car there is usually no complications.

In general that is enough time if you don't wait too long. Talk to your OB and ask him based on commute when he feels you should come in. Obviously this won't help if you have a complication set in. Ask him what he thinks you should do in case of problems. Obviously if you notice bleeding of anything more then a bit of streaking then you should call 911.
