If A-Rod does opt out of the contract I really believe the Yankees would try to do better than Betemit or Duncan at 3rd base. They would certainly have some spare dollars to go looking.

I don't think Betemit is an everyday kinda guy. He isn't the best defensively, and he has little to no plate discipline. Same goes for Duncan. I think Duncan should be a once in a while DH or outfielder. The Yankees should trade someone for a solid 3rd baseman or sign a free agent.

Not a yankee fan, but they ought to replace him with Mike Lowell- it would take him away from the Red Sox, and Lowell actually appears to be hitting in the post season.
Now, you will lose 40 RBI's or so, but many of those RBI's lost will be meaningless, coming in the form of 3 run homers and 2 run doubles that augment already substantial leads.
On the other hand, with Lowell instead of Rodriguez, you will save about $20M per season (including the luxury tax).

The best choice available to replace A-Rod is Mike Lowell. Strange things sometimes happen to people who put on the pinstripes, He may improve. You never know.
And ya'll just send A-Rod on over to The Windy City, we could use that big bat, and anyways Aramis Ramirez sucks.
The Yankess can have Him if they want, free of charge far as I'm concerned.

Internal solution: Wilson Betemit
External solutions: Miguel Cabrera and Mike Lowell (please not Lowell).
Zero chance: Shelley Duncan, Bronson Sardinha

They would have to deal for another quality player, but getting one of A-Rod's caliber is not possible because there isn't anyone else of his caliber.
