My advice for writing a good game storyline would be to have a storyline like nothing else that has ever been seen in games or storylines that are unpredictable and has twists and turns all the time.
I think that the good v.s. evil storylines are just getting too old. If you were to have a storyline like that, make it unpredictable. For example, lets say the hero of the game starts out fighting evil, but as the game progresses, he finds out that the people are secretly planning to kill him for whatever reason, and then he turns on his own people and takes down the ones that are plotting against him.
If you want good example for a good storyline, the Metal Gear Solid series is a good example. The storyline in Metal Gear Solid 3 was like a roller coaster ride because there are so many twists and turns.

Do some research on the net of how other game developers started out, particually smaller developers and see exactly what inspired them with their storylines. Try thinking of things your interested in and try borrowing ideas out of some films or books. If it's your first game story line then don't be aiming to make the story perfect, keep playing around with ideas and you'll improve as you go along.
