The kids were awake during the night and the time had reached early morning. Remember the previous episode happened during the night? Morning comes again eventually. Perhaps I was watching a different episode .....
Pat was just trying to get the kids to sleep - not necessarily at their bedtime.

Pat had been up all night with Peter and Bobby, buy the time they had got to sleep, it was daylight. Thats when Ian left the Hospital and drove Steven to the nut-nut home.

because it was early in the morning, sun comes up about 4 oor 5 but starts being light around 3.30, pat was telling them a story because bobby couldnt sleep without jane, jane normally tells him a story, so pat had to to calm him down.
