I am wondering if Cat 6 would be any better than Cat5 as far as the connections are concerned from my computer-modem-router.

My thoughts are that maybe cat6 is a better cable but at this point in technology its more cable that is neccessary to do the job and it would just be a waste of money? Please explain. Thanks

No.

Running 100Mbps Ethernet on Cat6 is like driving a Prius on the Autobahn. Sure is a smooth ride, but that doesn't make the Prius go any faster.

The bottleneck for your Internet connection is what ever service you have with your service provider. Think of a computer network like plumbing in your house. If the water comes in a 1/4 inch pipe, it doesn't matter that you have 3/4 inch pipe inside the house.

No, it's not going to help your internet connection. If you have a network in your home and also have a gigabit switch, then sharing resources between computers in your home would be faster, but it will not have any effect on the internet.

The reason is that CAT 5 cables are rated to 100 Mbit/s, and your internet connection is not faster than that.

Cat 6 will only help if you have Gigabit ethernet. It will not help with most internet connections because most don't even go up to the 100Mbps rate that Cat 5e cable supports. If you use Cat 6 cable between two computers then it will be faster but just for internet use at this point it won't help much.

No. LAN speeds are generally 100Mbps, at worst older equipment is 10Mbps. The fastest reliable internet connections are only 8Mbps, with a few providers offering up to about 20Mbps, but I don't know anyone who has obtained even better than 6Mbps from these. Your LAN speed should be able to run right over the top of your internet speed even on obsolete CAT4.
