In the good old days. I lived in a cold water flat,
had a broken down car and a B&W TV with
rabbit ears.

Now I have a house, a car and cable! :)

I went back to the old basics for a bit over a year. No running water, no cook stove, 2 30 amp fuses, had to sled my groceries in from my car a 1/4 mile away. Haul drinking water and learn to cook on a flat topped heat stove--no TV, no phone, radio maybe.
Had to shovel my way to the out house in the mornings during the winter and shovel the side of the house to see out the window. I loved it and if I could have figured out a way to stay there and earn a living I would still be there. The air was crisp and clear the deer and bears and owls and even the cougar that stalked me was beautiful, eagles were awesome--nasty squirrels that threw pine cones at me went in the cook pot. I have it all now compared to that but am I happier, I'm not sure.

I can't understand why people could possibly be confused
and give various ambigious answers to this question---
when the answer is so simple !

Keep all the good stuff we have in the USA (I can't speak for other countries ) things like air-conditioning,Cable TV,modern
Refrigerators, good roads and Japanese model cars
assembled in the USA,Boeing made airplanes ,K-Mart,
MacDonalds,Frozen Foods, Citizens who were born here
or entered the country legally , our belated recognition of
Racial Equality and all the gains made by women over
us dominant war-minded males , our trips to the Moon
on Gossamer Wings, Satellites and Scientists,Writers,
Composers,Artists,The Silver Screen ,Talking Pictures,
Color Movies, Nobel Prize winners like Al Gore and the
Scientists who made it,our hosting of the United Nations
and the wonderful sophisticated visitors who grace our
shores ---then go back home after saying "Thanks---and
Toodle--ooh !"

Then go back to the good stuff we left behind and try
to repair some of the damage we've done by digging
up some concrete and replanting trees ---bring back
Mom's apple pie and fritters and home made Ice
Cream ,Family picnics with Potato salad, Corn
Bread --Sliced Ham and Cold Turkey, and well
behaved children --Hats for Ladies ---hats for men
so we can revitalize the tipping of hats when meeting
ladies, removing them in elevators , ---you know
how to add to this list ----
And oh yes!

Have Policemen walking the beats once more so
they'll get to know the neighborhood !

No! I could easily live without some of the creature comforts I now have but I would not have my Hero/partner.
I realize a major illness or tragedy could occur and we could be back at jump street. I don't think anyone is ever secure enough not to be swept back to ground zero.
But today I'd have a companion to battle it all through. If Armageddon strikes tomorrow I know I'm on the right team to survive.

A good question and my answer is a yes and no one, if that is allowed?
In the good old days I had 2 lovely children and a feckless husband and so we were always skint. i worked nights to put food on the table!

The feckless husband left in 1992, by which time I had got myself an education and I went on to get a good job. I now live alone, in my own house and I am perfectly happy. i have a partner who lives in his own house, about 8 miles away. It is an arrangement that suits us both.

As a kid, I was overprotected in some ways, and was verbally abused, by the same mother.
"No you can't be in the school play. You don't have any talent."
"Why don't you quit that choir? Choir director doesn't even recognize that you can't sing."
"You're not pretty enough to join this.." "You're not smart enough to do that.."

Good old days? At school & at church I got along ok. At home, I just didn't..

Nowadays, we have enough money to get along on. I can go out and do any dang thing I choose to go do, without fear that my husband might say I am not capable.

Happier now, by far.

Both times have their goods and bads. Life was simpler then, today stuff is so complicated. I miss the good times I
used to have with my family. Then we all lived close by,
now everyone is so far away, that seeing them is a major
hassle, and many of them are now dead.
I don't have more now, but what I do have is mine and it
works for me. I do have a nice hubby. I didn't have him
when I was a lot younger. I guess it works both ways.

Heck No!!! During the worst of it, I was up and got the kids'
dressed/fed/off to the baby
sitter. Then fight the freeway
to work...Work my tail off all
day. Fall outa my chair at 5PM. Fight the freeway. Pick
up the kids/listen to teacher
rant/home with screaming and hungry kids who pulled
everything out of the frig before I got it cooked.
Eat/clean up/bathe the kids/
put down in bed/listen to
problems and crying. Go in
and fall across the bed at
11pm, Up at 6am and do it
all over again.
Does that sound like a good time to y ou?

Sometimes I think so...especially when I reflect on my childhood...YES YES those were better days :-)

I also remember the early days of my childrens' lives...and those were simply GREAT days...when we were so very close and they thought of me as their champion and most fav person in the world...yep, that has changed too....at least in action, maybe not their hearts.

BUT do I want to relive the struggles of days gone by, even though I have a new set of struggles now? NOPE :-)

Like I tell my husband 'My VW days are over!!" We came from SF CA and are now in Houston. He talks about going back but who can afford it? I had several VW's over the yrs. in SF but now I have gotten use to a much more comfortable car with A/C.
But I will tell you we had more fun and crazy stories about those good ole days (some I can not tell my grand kids!!LOL)
Yes they are fun to remember but I would not trade them off for today unless I could have my ole body back too. Then I might consider it!

My good ole days memories aren't about things, it is about gentle, respectful, well-mannered people that I miss the most. It is about having clean air and more open space than we have today. It is about not living with foul language or smut as the norm. So in that respect, yeah the good ole days were better. However, do I love the new technology and medical discoveries!
